Hello,

The smallfs files in RetroCade are hard coded in, it does not discover what is available on the fly. So they might be listed but not actually play anything.

In the latest ZAP IDE release there is a RetroCade example, if you select the ZPUino/RetroCade as the board type you should see, "examples/ZPUino_Examples/RetroCade_Synth".

Can you try to open that sketch and see if it compiles? It should include a cut down version of the smallfs files.

Jack.

Hi Jack,

sorry I did not reply yesterday.. just on lunch break so I though I would take a minute and look at it,

used ZAP-2.0.6-windows.zip, did a  clean extract/install/ load, compile get the same errors. then go to  hardware\zpuino\zpu\libraries\ZPUino_Examples\examples\RetroCade_Sketch and removed the three smallfs folders (smallfs, smallfs-mid, smallfs-production) compile once more and it works.

Hope this helps...

BTW, the git hub repositories are still at 2.0.4 version, I need to compile a version for my Linux system although based on the changelog it does not seem to be much different..

Cheers,

Pasquale

Well Jack, got my Linux environment working, had to do the following being that I am running a 64bit OS.

ln -s zpu_tools_linux32.tar.bz2  zpu_tools_linux64.tar.bz2 in the /ZPUino/build/linux folder, I did not see the error when I was doing ant build all I saw was the BUILD SUCCESSFUL.. see below

linux64-build:
[copy] Copying 1 file to /media/archive/workingfolder/papilio/ZPUino/build/linux/work/hardware/tools
[copy] Copying 1 file to /media/archive/workingfolder/papilio/ZPUino/build/linux/work/lib
[exec] tar (child): ../../zpu_tools_linux64.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
[exec] tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
[exec] tar: Child returned status 2
[exec] tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
     [exec] Result: 2

BUILD SUCCESSFUL
Total time: 10 seconds

by the way, this has also fixed my issue with the smallfs the sketches  now compile completely..

now on to other sketches..

thanks,
Pasquale

Hi Jack,

I have similar zap 2.0.6 build issues as @Puskyer above did with the windows install. I just received the RetroCade MegaWing Bundle and am trying to get started. After removing the smallfs files as @Puskyer did, I still can't get a clean build. I get the same errors when trying to build the BPW5007 Button/LED wing. It seems to be failing at the link stage not finding the file zupino.lds even thought the path "looks" correct and the file exists. I do notice the error message doesn't print the entire path (COREPATH I think) in the diagnostic message. It omits the leading "E:\Test" in the path. Compiler output:

Hi rdww60

just a clarification the Papilio_QuickStart is for the BPW5007 Button/LED wing and what you seem to be compiling is the RetroCade_Sketch which is for the RetroCade MegaWing.

you may want to try first to compile  the following  in the ZAP 2.6 open

"File" then "Examples" then "ZPUino_Examples" and finally "Papilio_QuickStart" sketch and see if it compiles and if your Button/LED works.

what I did notice is that your last line "zpu-elf-g++: Spectrum\Papilio\zap-2.0.6-windows\zap-2.0.6\hardware\zpuino\zpu\cores\zpuino/zpuino.lds: No such file or directory"

and mine is "F:\workspace\papilio\zap-2.0.6/hardware/tools/zpu/bin/zpu-elf-g++ -O2 -nostartfiles -Wl,-T -Wl,F:\workspace\papilio\zap-2.0.6\hardware\zpuino\zpu\cores\zpuino/zpuino.lds -Wl,--relax -Wl,--gc-sections -Wl,-Map,C:

Thanks @OmniTechnoMancer, that was the issue. I would have thought spaces in file names would have been resolved along time ago :-)

Now on to trying to learn this. Thanks again.

Hi @Pusky, Thanks for replying and giving ideas. I'm using Windows 7. I tried @OmniTechnoMancer's suggestion, and everything now compiles okay. Thanks again. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions...

Well no spaces in my path, still having problems with having the smallfs folders in the RetroCade_Sketch sketch folder.

I guess I've got other issues too. Apparently I can't even get the Papilio loader correct. I followed help to be sure I had FTDI and Jre installed.

Using the quick start guide, where it says to "Download Papilio Pro LX9 QuickStart bit file.", I can do that no problem. I bought the retrocede and it has the Papilio Pro LX9 on the silkscreen, so I am assuming this is the correct bit file.

When I double click it (without board plugged in to USB), I can select the "Run" button.. I also get "Could not access USB device 0403:6010" message - which makes sense since the board is not plugged in. When I exit, the papilio-prog.exe *32 process exits too.

If I have the board plugged in and double click the bit file, the GUI comes up the same way EXCEPT the RUN button is grayed out. There is no message in the information box. When I exit, the app goes away but the papilio-prog.exe *32 process doesn't exit. Any subsequent double clicking on the bit file gives no action with the GUI, it never starts - unless I kill the process.

SO I can't even get the bit file loaded....I'm following the documentation, but apparently missing something. Any ideas??

Note: I just had a similar problem with TI EVMs. I had 3 which would hang on exit. The use the ftd2xx.dll for communication too. They sent me a patch to fix each one. Not sure what they did in the patch. Not sure it is related.

Hi @rdww60..

did you try the steps @mkarisson shared with me on Oct 23rd?

in your c:\Program Files (x86)\Gadget Factory\Papilio Loader\programmer\win32

execute "papilio-prog.exe -c"

if you do not have your papilio pro connected you will get something like

Could not access USB device 0403:6010.

with the papilio pro connected to USB. you shroud see something like

Using devlist.txt

JYAG chainpos: 0 Device IDCODE = 0x24001093   Desc:  XC6SLX9

ISC_Done            =1

ISC_Enabled       =0

House Cleaning  =1

DONE                 =1

give that a shot, that will at least tell you if you are talking to the board...

then you can try the following if it is...

cd c:\Program Files (x86)\Gadget Factory\Papilio Loader\programmer\win32\

papilio-prog -v -b ..\bscan_spi_xc6slx9.bit -f c:\Program Files (x86)\Gadget Factory\RetroCade Synth\ZPUino_SOC\RetroCade-1.1-zpuino-1.0-PapilioPro-S6LX9-RetroCade-1.1.bit

I don't seem to have the same version of .bit you have I used the one that came with the install software. but I will download it and try..

Good luck,

Pusky

Hi @Puskyer, sorry for late reply, had to do some revenue generating work and remind my wife I still love her :-)

I did look at what @mkarisson shared and that wasn't my problem. I was getting the most current version - 2.5

I did finally get the RetroCade synthesizer bit file to load, my serial ports were messed up. I had fits uninstalling and reinstalling the FTDI software, but finally got it in. Once I did this I was able to load the bit file and run the application - although I'm not much with synthesizers, so I really didn't know what I was doing. I was able to the LED wings application to work also, which gave me more confidence that I have things more in order now.

Seeing your Sunday post made me think more about what my goals using this package are.

My background is test, and I want to investigate the use of this mechanism to come up with more ways support, and lower cost ways to implement, solutions to customer products.

To start, I got an Arduino Uno R3 starter kit to bring myself up to speed. I got part way through and decided to move on and to begin looking at something a little closer to what I expect to be working with should the investigation develop further. For this, I purchased a 16 bit DAC evaluation kit for the TI DAC8411 device.

Then, I also purchased a launch pad for each of the Piccolo, Stellaris and MSP430 TI products, and the Papilio Pro RetroCade. All based on the thought of portability between them all using the Arduino programming environment. All I would need to do is figure out the pin mapping between them all, adjust for bit width, speed, supply voltage and the be good to go.

So where am I at?

  1. I have the DAC8411 running on the Arduino, doing to basic ramps, etc. Of course, since I am using the 10 ADC of the ATMega, I can only view data as an indicator. I also have to do bit twiddling to go from 8 bit to 16 bit programming.
  2. I also have done this for the MSP430 using Energia, and have delayed the Piccolo and Stellaris for a couple of reasons. Mainly because the Energia (Arduino) environment for Piccolo is not implemented yet, I think the Stellaris is just released.
  3. Then I moved on the install and bring up the Papilio platform and do the same on it. So far, I have been able to get only the demos to run. Like many others, I think the main issue has been the clarity of the documentation. BUT, it certainly seems to be getting better based on some of the other posts I have read on the forum. So I am hoping this continues.

What is next?

  1. I need to figure out what I need to get Zupino up and running. This is where my ignorance starts to show about what steps I need to take. First, I think I need to locate the equivalent bit file for Zupino as is provided for the RetroCade.
  2. The bit file along with mapping the pins between the UNO and Papilio, I think should get me to the point of being able to work with the DAC8411 EVM kit again. IF THIS IS A MISUNDERSTANDING PLEASE FEEL FREE TO COMMENT.
  3. Complete the DAC8411 EVM kit exercise on Papilio
  4. Install the necessary pieces to use the Papilio Schematic Library
  5. Add some logic to use via the Zupino fabric, create bit file, and program the FPGA. I may find there are more steps here as I learn how to do this part
  6. Extend code to utilize the added logic.

I'm hoping I have not misunderstood what I can do with Papilio. I think that I can use the LX9 board of the RetroCade as a Papilio FPGA to extend the logic so I don't have to mess with the RetroCade Mega-Wing.

Stand by for more questions and comments as I work through these steps....and thanks for any input and pointers.

Hello rdww60,

Thank you for giving the Papilio a chance. :)

Here is some documentation to help with getting started with the ZPUino Soft Processor:

http://papilio.cc/index.php?n=Papilio.ZAPIDE

http://papilio.cc/index.php?n=Papilio.ZPUinoUserGuide

http://papilio.cc/index.php?n=Papilio.Learning#ZPUino

I'm also working on something called the Papilio Schematic Editor and will be writing many new tutorials at the learn.gadgetfactory.net website. Here is a first guide on getting setup with Papilio Schematic Library.

I am very interested in any feedback you have to make the documentation better, it is a critical piece of the puzzle here, so any insight you can provide to make it better is greatly appreciated.

Jack.

Hi Jack,

Thanks for the links to get me started I'm sure it will be helpful.

I just checked out the learn.gadgetfactory.net, and see good stuff there. I downloaded the ISE package and am about to install. I'm in windows 7, and I see there is 1 tar file and 3 zip-xz files. There is no real instructions on the order in which to unravel these files for installation. I'm using 7z to un-package them all.

The Xilinx link to ISE is stale, here is the updated:

http://www.xilinx.com/products/design-tools/ise-design-suite/ise-webpack.html

I'm starting with the .tar file first, and then run xsetup.exe from there, that seems intuitive.

Once I get my DAC8411EVM running on Papilio, I'll move on to the schematic library... and be glad to give feedback.

Will keep you posted.

Wow @rdww60 that's a pretty impassive goal..

mine is realy to see if I can experience some of the computer memories from the late 70s/80s. My goal over the next year or so is to restore my first original home computer. it was an Ohio Scientific Superboard II, which came as a kit that I had to solder together. based on the Papilio Pro I initially was going to see if I could reproduce it via FPGA. this is still partly my goal, but as of this past weekend I went looking for my old system and found it. not in very good shape but I think it can be restored. Then my next goal will be to introduce  my Raspberry PI, Arduino and Papilio to it and see how I can interface them.

right now I am looking at how to recover some of the programs from the old audio cassettes. still looking for the 5 1/4 inch floppies I has with its OS, I hope I can find them.

well, I will keep an eye out on your progress

Hi Jack,

I downloaded and installed the ISE webpack and have been following the tutorial. I had issues in a couple of places and need to know it if is something I'm doing wrong:

1) Once we've created the papilio_soc_hase.bit file, I don't see some of the activity you report in the tutorial. When I click right and do write permanently to Papilio board, I get the pop-up window and select write to SPI Flash. BUT, when I press the run button I see no activity and dialog output to the information window as your example shows. I tried several times, but nothing.

2) I un-plugged and re-plugged the board and also pressed the reset button and tried again. Still no dialog in the information window. I decided to move to the next step just to see if the FPGA got programmed. I guess I'm not really sure which board type to select. I got the retrocede, but have the wings removed. I selected the ZPUino 1.0 (32 bit) Boards->ZPUino on Papilio Pro (LX9), RetroCade on RetroCade MegaWing. I was really thinking it should be the ZPUino 2.0 (32 bit) Boards->ZPUino on Papilio Pro (LX9) since I was using the hardware without the wings. So I need some clarification on the board selection based on product.

3) Using the RetroCade option, because this was the option that had the Papilio_QuickStart Example, I uploaded the file to the board. I get the message "Board: Unknown board @ 96000000 Hz (0xa4041700)" and on the next line "Programming completed successfully in 1.07 seconds. In the tutorial, the board was known (I think Papilio One 500).

4) When I run, I see the ascii table being printed, so something must be working correctly.

I think I get confused on the board selection because of the board unknown message I get in ZAP IDE. Which board selection should I be making?

I'm going to try one of my Arduino sketches now to see how that goes as I am now under the impression that this would my next step before adding some simple logic. I need to find the mapping file to know how to map the Arduino UNO R3 pins to the Papilio ZPUino pins.

My only comments on the tutorial so far, is that I was slow to find some of the webpack tabs. It might be useful to put a circle around it in the picture to help newbies like me :-)  and maybe a short dialog on initiating the webpack install. Un-tar file  Xilinx_ISE_DS_14.7_1015_1-1.tar and then navigate in that folder to xsetup.exe and double click on it. The installer takes care of the remaining files.

I'll keep you posted on the next steps.

Thanks.

Update...

I reviewed again, and installed again and still have issues...I'm getting more confused the more I mess with this.

Do I use PapilioLoader-2.5.1-Setup.zip or RetroCade_Synth-1.1-Setup.zip? when I install the PapilioLoader it shows up as an installed program. When I double click on Quickstart-Papilio_Pro_LX9-v1.5.bit and run, NOTHING appears in information window. And when I use Putty to connect (in my case COM8) I get nothing. When I install RetroCade_Synth it shows up as an installed program, but the PapilioLoader is gone...I didn't uninstall it. When I double click on Quickstart-Papilio_Pro_LX9-v1.5.bit and run, NOTHING appears in information window. And when I use Putty to connect (in my case COM8) I sometimes get the ascii table for a couple of seconds and then it hangs. If I wiggle the USB connector the user LED flashes, that bothers me. Is there a hotline to call so that I can talk to someone about this? I've spent way to much time getting this up and running based on the tutorials. email: brian.page@testspectrum.com

Ok, lots of questions here. Let me try to take them one at a time:

Hi Jack,

Thanks.

1) You are using Windows right? Sometimes it sounds like you might be using Linux which changes some small things... You should be seeing output in your Papilio Loader window, sometimes in Linux it doesn't refresh until after programming is complete.

2) You want to be using the 1.0 Vanilla variant for any custom ZPUino bit files you make. 2.0 boards are just there for people who want to beta test, I think I will remove them from the next release... For Papilio Pro boards all Vanilla variants show up as Unknown board.

Please use the Vanilla board selection and don't be concerned about the Unknown board type. The board type just needs to match for Hyperion variants, you only need to worry if it says boards do not match.

The RetroCade Synth setup was made with people who are just going to use the RetroCade as a synthesizer and are not necessarily interested in the other aspects of the Papilio. My goal was to package up everything they would need instead of requiring them to run a bunch of different installers. The RetroCade setup should include the latest version of the Papilio Loader. It sounds like maybe the RetroCade setup is stepping on the Papilio Loader setup. I need to check in on this, in the mean time an install of Papilio Loader after RetroCade synth should add it back into the start menu.

The most troubling thing here is that you are seeing nothing appear in your Papilio Loader window. Please check for any instances of papilio-prog.exe that are still in the task manager, in my experience it can hang if something happens during a flash and you have to kill it manually. Also kill any outstanding Java processes. In worst case scenario reboot the computer, but killing any papilio-prog.exe processes should do the trick.

I will try to be in the forum chat room to help you out.

Hi Jack,

1) Using Windows 7 Ultimate on Dell Precision M6700

2) Will use 1.0 Hyperion Vanilla Variant. Saw that I made best progress last night doing this.

3) RetroCade; Can I not use this with the Papilio Schematic Library?

3a) It also looks like there is a version 1.1 of the Papilio Schematic Library, do I need that?

4) Agreed on no output from Papilio loader. Will try uninstalling and install RetroCade first and then Papilio Loader. I also see that in the device manager, that the COM ports don't take on the Papilio name like Arduino and MSP430 do. Is this an issue? FTDI notes that Windows 7 will not install drivers unless they are certified, so I had to install the certified version. Also, JRE1.7 instead of JRE1.6

4a) I changed to the expert settings and get the following: Using devlist.txt Invalid chain position 0, position must be less than 0 (but not less than 0). This is the same message I got above when trying to burn the bootloader. The "incompatible response with mask xxxx01" bothers me, but I can't say I really know what that means other than not good.

I need a couple of hours to try your suggestions and will post again then. Thanks.

It looks like the chat feature is down, it worked yesterday. I have a support ticket in to find out why.

3) I'm working towards building a RetroCade variant in the Papilio Schematic Library, but we are not there yet.

3a) I just released the new version last night, there are some usability improvements. I would recommend using it, I'm going to make an announcement and a new tutorial soon.

The invalid chain position error is troublesome, please keep track of how often that is happening.

Jack.

Will go buy a LogicStart as soon as we get RetroCade resolved so I can get to the Schematic Library.

Ran the following and still can't get bit files to load with PapilioLoader

Frankly I'm out of ideas and feel like I'm spinning my wheels now.

I always get invalid chain position.

Really smells like I'm having serial port issues although I can plug in the Arduino and it gets a Arduino named port. It get the SAME COM port assigned regardless of which USB port I plug into. This has to be a clue...

Here's my notes:

Uninstalled both RetroCade and Papilio Loader

Installed RetroCade and then Papilio Loader

Did NOT uninstall/reinstall FTDI drivers or JRE1.7 (Note: Papilio installs a 8/24/2011 version of FTDI drivers, the certified are 2013)

Plugged in board (getting different COM ports assigned depending on which port on PC I plug inoto. COM port does not take on Papilio name as Arduino does)

Started Papilio Loader from start menu and selected E:\Papilio\Quickstart-Papilio_Pro_LX9-v1.5.bit, tried both SPI Flash and write to FPGA.

Both give the error:

Using devlist.txt

Invalid chain position 0, position must be less than 0 (but not less than 0).

Did not observe the papilio-prog.exe process still lingering in task manager.

No activity on any port when connecting with Putty (with or without RetroCade wing installed)

Start ZAP2.0.6 (path: E:\Papilio\zap-2.0.6)

Select 2nd serial port (COM12 in my case)

Select Papilio Programmer

Selected board -> Papilio Pro LX9 "Shifty AVR8"

Selected Examples -> AVR8_Examples -> Papilio_QuickStart

Select upload and get the following errors:

/papilio/cp: cannot create regular file `C:\\Users\\Brian\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\build5677968668055488612.tmp/ftd2xx.dll': Device or resource busy

/papilio/cp: cannot create regular file `C:\\Users\\Brian\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\build5677968668055488612.tmp/papilio-prog.exe': Device or resource busy

Uninstalled both RetroCade and Papilio Loader

Plugged board into each USB port and uninstalled the software (delete file) each time

Run FTD Clean Utility V1.0

Reboot

Reinstall without FTDI

Install RetroCade (Can't upgrate to the 1.1 bit file without having Papilio Loader installed)

Install Papilio Loader

Try upgrade to RetroCade 1.1 bit file (C:\Program Files (x86)\Gadget Factory\RetroCade Synth\ZPUino_SOC\RetroCade-1.1-zpuino-1.0-PapilioPro-S6LX9-RetroCade-1.1.bit)

Gives same error:

Using devlist.txt

Invalid chain position 0, position must be less than 0 (but not less than 0).

Try Papilio_QuckStart E:\Papilio\Quickstart-Papilio_Pro_LX9-v1.5.bit

Gives same error:

Using devlist.txt

Invalid chain position 0, position must be less than 0 (but not less than 0).

This happens regardless of USB port I plug into. Still don't see COM port take on Papilio name like Arduino and each USB port gets different COM port assignments

papilio-prog.exe process does not linger

Uninstall COM port drivers and files through device manager while board is plugged in

Install FTDI CDM 2.08.30 WHQL Certified drivers. Installs 07/12/2013 Bus/D2XX Driver and VCP driver

Plug in board and drivers install. Noted that installed searches for latest drivers

Try Papilio_QuckStart E:\Papilio\Quickstart-Papilio_Pro_LX9-v1.5.bit

Gives same error:

Using devlist.txt

Invalid chain position 0, position must be less than 0 (but not less than 0).

This happens regardless of USB port I plug into. Still don't see COM port take on Papilio name like Arduino and each USB port gets different COM port assignments

papilio-prog.exe process does not linger

Let me know if you have any more ideas.

Thanks,

Brian

Well, that error message, "Invalid chain position 0", usually means that there is a problem with the solder joints between the FTDI chip and the FPGA. But what is confusing here is that you have obviously been working before now... I don't recall a case where it was working and then out of the blue started getting that error message so I'm racking my brain to think if there is any other explanation besides a hardware problem.

If you have any inclination can you take a look at the FT2232 pins and the top row of the FPGA and see if you can see anything obvious?

As always we will replace the board if there are any hardware issues... I'm not really thinking of any other reason for that error message, if you are seeing Invalid chain position then we should probably send out a replacement right away. Can you send us an email at support@gadgetfactory.net with your current mailing address and a link to this thread so we can get a replacement board shipped out?

Hmmm, as I keep thinking, maybe a board problem is contributing to why your papilio-prog.exe keeps hanging up and causing Papilio Loader to not show anything in the console pane... It fits... Well, sorry for the frustration, lets get that board swapped out right away.

Jack
