  1. Hello, I just got my new retrocade synth bundle in the mail today, very excited! I followed the instructions to download the installer for the dashboard, and I got the papilio loader to upgrade the firmware. I was able to upgrade the SPI flash, all portions of the upgrade passed verification. I opened up the dashboard, and attempted to play some notes, but I am getting no audio. I see that there is a little LED on the board that flashes when note on and note off info is rec'd from my computer keyboard, but I don't hear any sound. Also the Screen on the Retrocade is blank. The light is on but I do not see any text. Is that normal when you have it hooked up to your computer? I changed patches on the dashboard to make sure I didn't just goof up the sound settings, but it didn't make any difference. What am I missing? Thanks!

Hi again, I am possibly having another configuration issue, hopefully I'm just doing something stupid: I am experiencing a "popping" sound every time I play a note that isn't a continuous run or melody. So if there are rests between the notes, I get a pop, like when a waveform is not starting at zero amplitude. I don't know if that's what's happening but that is the best way to describe the sound. I uploaded a youtube video to help demonstrate the sounds I am getting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jWXihu1luY Near the end of the video I set the envelope so that you can hear the popping sound that I am talking about better. But even when the envelope is not set that way, the pop is present with each sounded note. This appears to be more so with the SID chip, but I can sometimes get the Atari chip to do it as well. This effect is not present when playing YMD or SID files. Thanks again for the continued patience of all who witness my blunderings.

  7. Ha, should be able to sneak in and try a new serial test before I head out to work...I'll post that in a second. As to the 2nd part of your question: I have used my MIDI controllers, and some weird nameless USB-2-MIDI converter that I got like 8 years ago off ebay. I can try using the midi connections from an audio interface next time. But when I was reading the serial output, I was using my Micro Korg as the midi trigger. As to the third question: If I use the dashboard with the non-debug bit file, and use just the USB connection to trigger notes, the noise is still present. I'll post back with the results of the 115200 serial results

Hi Jack, That's unfortunate that you can't recreate this issue, that makes it hard...hmmm So, I've played around more, and the "thump" is occurring at the same time as the note, but it is actually tied to the key presses. So, there is a small "thunk"/"click" that sounds with every key-press and the same sound with every key-release. This effect is present regardless of how I set the envelope, or which instrument I play. It is not louder with any changes to patches, and it is present on both the SID and the YM chip. This is true of the regular version and the debug version. after that I re-loaded the debug version of the bit file, connected to the 2nd port of the board via DesignLab @ 9600, played a C major scale, and this is what printed: 7owwïwwïwwïwwïwwwwïwo I thought maybe I had the settings wrong, so in order to follow your instructions exactly, I used tera term to connect to the 2nd serial port at 8N1 9600, played a C major scale, and got: wwowwïwwïwwïwwwïïwwo pressing one key resulted sometimes in: w and sometimes: ww or sometimes ïww and occasionally 7 releasing the key, so far, always looks like: o For some reason, the stuff didn't copy correctly, so substitute the character: ï above for the upside-down U, Let me know if you would rather I uploaded a screenshot or two. Does any of that mean anything to you?
  9. Hey all, I plan to play the RetroCade Synth live via a keyboard, without it being connected to a computer. As such, I'm going to need a midi controller to be able to handle all of the deeper menu settings. Anybody have make/model recomendations for MIDI keyboards?

    Best MIDI controller(s) to use with RetroCade Synth?

    Here is a tutorial from Colin's Lab that I came across a while ago that details how to make a usb to midi converter sans-computer, using an arduino board and a USB Host shield: http://makezine.com/2010/11/30/usbhacking/ And I have to say I am NOT a fan of controllers ditching direct MIDI out. Some companies are doing 3.5mm to midi DIN breakout cables for their devices so they can still keep the slim profile(like the new Korg Electribe), which is nice for folks who still like to goof with hardware sometimes.
  11. Right, the SID and YMD files do not suffer from this issue. And yeah, unfortunately it happens across multiple controllers, including the QWERTY keyboard via USB using the retrocade Synth dashboard. Could this be resulting from underpowering? Should I try to track down a better power supply?
  12. Pardon me, I said sketch, but meant the bit file. I loaded the non-debug bit file using papilio loader 2.8 onto the retrocade synth, and I'm still having the same issue. The sound is even present when playing using the QWERTY keyboard through the retrocade Synth dashboard. What am I doing wrong?
  13. Up front: I am a total noob to FPGAs and the RetroCade Synth. I just got my new RetroCade Synth up and running, and have been playing the YMD and SID files that come pre loaded. This thing sounds AMAZING. My PC is unavailable at the moment, so I am using the unit "headless" so to speak, therefore no access to the software dashboard,( which might be the problem). I am having an issue communicating to the RetroCade Synth via MIDI. I can trigger notes, but they don't seem to decay. I can play a note and it continues to play until I play another note on that channel. The behavior is consistent across all 7 channels. I hooked up a midi controller, being sure that it was transmitting MIDI signals by using the midi controller to play my Juno-106 briefly first. Then I connected the MIDI controller to the RetroCade and was able to trigger notes, but the notes stay on indefinitely. I then tried 2 other MIDI controllers with the same results. So I can create a pretty awesome drone by going through each channel and playing a note, but I'd like to be able to play rests too Is there some sort of "latch" setting on the retrocade? I'm going to try to get my PC back tonight and will post results if I am able to fix the issue. If this something I can address without the dashboard, I would be very grateful to anyone who could offer some advice. Thanks!

    "...Just one more thing...." I just got the chance to upload the new code you posted here, but no go. The zip file you posted above for 1.3-b will not let me extract it for some reason. I am getting the following error: ! C:\\...Downloads\RetroCade-1.3-zpuino-2.0-PapilioPro-S6LX9-RetroCade-1.3-b.zip: The archive is corrupt I tried re-downloading it a few times with the same result.

    Okay! Everything seems working, except for the noise channels on the SID chip, surely I am just goofing up a setting again, but I can't get them to make sound. It's really odd, because I did manipulate those settings on the dashboard when testing, but it's possible that I wasn't communicating on the right COM port or something when I was testing that stuff. I was able to get the sounds working with the old code that you sent me just fine, but I'll load this code when I get a chance, since having those values default to some kind of audio feedback will be useful when I don't have a monitor attached. I've also discovered that the midi implementation of the controller I'm using turns out to be more complicated than I thought. It's a good thing because it allows for a great deal of flexibility in the type of information I'm sending. But it also means that CC programming is a little trickier. AND I can change the way that note on/off signals are sent, which again, cuts both ways. Now to spend time with the documentation.... Thanks for spending the time to help me get up and running with this. Now that I have baseline operation, I look forward to going through your DesignLab tutorials and hopefully contributing something useful to the codebase instead of just clogging up the forums

    Awesome, let me know if you are having similar issues with the chip or not. I look forward to mapping my stuff eventually, but I think my buddy has that exact oxygen 49 midi controller, so I'll see if I can borrow it just so we can eliminate one more variable for testing. Thanks again!

    * I should amend my previous statement "I have NO Atari chip sounds" - What I meant is that I cannot trigger any Atari sounds. I can play the YMD files from memory and I do get beautiful beautiful sound.

    Okay, I was able to update to RetroCadeSynth-1.3, I plugged in a MicroKorg as the MIDI controller, and the Note off problem does appear to be fixed! I can get the notes to hang if I transmit on a midi channel that is different from what is selected on the retrocade itself. e.g.-keyboard sending on channel 2, Retrocade display is set to channel 1 by using the microJoystick. I don't consider that a bug, just common sense, but I thought I'd mention it in case the info was useful to you. Thanks Jack, this is great! I am however still having two issues with the MIDI control, but maybe I should break those out into yet another thread, anyways here is what's going on: 1. I do not have the ability to use the square wave voice on the SID chip, I can toggle Saw and Triangle just fine using the dashboard 2.I have NO atari chip sounds. So I have channels 1,2,3 of SID, and channel 7(drums), but no 4,5,6. Changing settings on the dashboard has no effect, and I cannot control those channels using the QWERTY keyboard, which I could do in version 1.1 I was hoping to add the retrocadeSynth to my existing stage rig, but maybe that isn't the right approach? Do you have a MIDI controller that you recommend, or that you have tested and plays well with the retrocadeSynth?

    Hello, No worries on the delay; gotta cram a life in there somewhere. Thanks for looking into this. I was able to hook up my PC and use the dashboard to communicate via USB and play notes with the qwerty keyboard, most of the channels did indeed decay as expected, but some of the channels still have infinite decay regardless of the envelope settings even when triggered. I think channels 2 and 5, but I didn't write it down, so don't quote me on that one. Hopefully that is helpful information. Godspeed and good bug-hunting to you and alive.

    After reading through this thread, I realized I should ask this follow up question under a new topic. The initial issue is solved since the hardware does now appear to be working. All MOD files are playing correctly, I just haven't quite figured out how to get manual external MIDI control happening.

    Alright! New retrocade megawing just arrived and it fired right up! The space invader animation runs nice and stable. Connected a midi controller and am able to get sounds, but the notes stay on indefinitely. Is there some config that I need to do to get note off signals detected?
